So much more than just ‘Casta Diva’: this festive season, relish every moment of Bellini’s masterpiece.
Norma lives between two worlds. She is the voice of an occupied and bellicose people, but also the secret mistress of Pollione, the enemy’s commander. Facing this impossible dilemma, she hides her children from her compatriots, while frantically trying to ward off their revolt. When Pollione determines to leave her for the much younger Adalgisa, all her worlds suddenly implode. Torn by love and a desire for revenge, she is left with just one final sacrifice.

Norma est déchirée entre deux mondes opposés. Prêtresse et voix d’un peuple opprimé sous le joug de l’occupant, elle entretient en secret une liaison avec Pollione, le commandant ennemi. Tiraillée entre devoir sacré et passion, elle cache l’existence de ses enfants à ses compatriotes, tout en s’efforçant d’apaiser l’élan de la révolte. Mais lorsque Pollione se détourne d’elle pour Adalgisa, une jeune prêtresse, l’équilibre fragile de son monde s’effondre. Écartelée entre amour et vengeance, Norma se résout à un acte de sacrifice ultime.

Norma leeft tussen twee werelden. Ze is de stem van een bezet en strijdlustig volk, maar ook de geheime minnares van Pollione, bevelhebber van de vijand. In dit onmogelijk spagaat tussen plicht en passie verbergt ze haar kinderen voor haar landgenoten, terwijl ze verwoed probeert hun opstand af te wenden. Wanneer Pollione haar wil verlaten voor de veel jongere Adalgisa, storten plots al haar werelden in. Verscheurd door wraaklust en liefde rest haar nog één ultiem bloedoffer.
